Your partner or roommate is knocking hard at the door of the toilet and you are having hard times there on the toilet seat. You are having a problem in passing stool. The condition of constipation occurs when the frequency of bowel movement is less than normal and bowel movement also becomes tough. We all have gone through this at least once at some point. Usually, constipation is not a serious problem. And, you need not worry if it improves in two or three days.
The gap between two bowel movements also varies from person to person. For some people, passing stool three times a day is normal. However, there are some people having a bowel movement only three times a week.
If it is the fourth day and you have not passed stool even for once, this is too long. The stool gets harder and harder and becomes more and more difficult to pass.
There is slow or no stool movement at all. This happens due to bowel obstruction, anal fissure, Colon cancer, bowel stricture, rectal cancer and sometimes abdominal cancer presses on the colon or rectum bulge.
There are some neurological problems affecting nerves responsible for contraction of muscles in rectum and colon. Movement of stool depends on the contraction of these muscles. This occurs due to multiple sclerosis, autonomic neuropathy, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease or stroke.
The problem in relaxation and contraction of pelvic muscles and weakened pelvic muscles also cause constipation.
Hormones play an important role in balancing fluids in the human body. There are some conditions and diseases that can lead to hormone imbalance and further cause constipation. These conditions and diseases include pregnancy, diabetes, overactive parathyroid gland and underactive thyroid.
Factors that can increase the risk of constipation include age, dehydration, being women, low fiber diet, depression, eating disorder and medications including narcotics, sedatives, medications for high blood pressure or some antidepressants.
