Oligospermia is a sexual issue in men in which the number of sperm cells is reduced in semen. Medication, lifestyle and stress are the primary causes of low sperm count. Here at Doxwell Ayurveda, we provide Ayurvedic Oligospermia treatment and also suggest good lifestyle changes.
This condition is one of the primary causes of male infertility. Also known by another name – oligozoospermia, it is a condition in which sperm count is reduced to below normal. This also reduces couple’s chances to achieve pregnancy. Some of the men suffering from this condition are also likely to have difficulty in getting and maintaining an erection. Oligospermia also effects ejaculation at orgasm.
Sperm count in ejaculation usually varies throughout life. Sperm count is counted as the number of sperms present in a millimeter of semen. According to World Health Organization, normal sperm count in a healthy male varies from 15 million to more than 200 million sperm per millimeter of semen. Sperm count lower than 15 million per millimeter of semen is low sperm count. Or, if the total sperm count per ejaculation is fewer than 39 million, it also qualifies as low sperm count.
Mild oligospermia | 10 to 15 million sperm/mL |
Moderate oligospermia | 5 to 10 million sperm/mL |
Severe oligospermia | 0 to 5 million sperm/mL |
The number of men having low sperm count is not clear as not all of them are diagnosed. A man visits a clinic for diagnosis only when he has difficulty with conceiving naturally.
Apart from the lifestyle, several conditions can also put a man at risk of oligospermia. Causes of oligospermia are:
Sexually transmitted diseases caused due to some viruses can also reduce sperm production.
Retrograde ejaculation in which semen enters bladder can also cause less sperm count in semen. Injuries, tumors, cancer and past surgeries can also interfere with ejaculation.
Medications for blood pressure, beta blockers and antibiotics are also responsible for low sperm count.
Sometimes low sperm count is caused due to hormone imbalance.
Exposure to chemicals used in painting materials, pesticides and cleaning agents and heavy metals like lead can also lower sperm count.
Wearing tight cloths, sitting with laptop over genitals or anything that causes overheating around testicles reduces sperm count.
Increased weight adversely affects the production of hormones which further reduces sperm count.
Cocaine, marijuana and some other substances can also decrease the sperm count in semen. Men smoking and drinking to excess are likely to suffer from this condition.
Enlarged veins can reduce the flow of blood to the testicles which increases the temperature of testicles. A high temperature is not good for production of sperm.
